On Monday 28th April, 2014 at 8am Turnitin reported that there was a problem with submissions being made to their systems. Initially this just impacted on students based in the U.S. but it soon became clear that the U.K. was also affected. Whilst it was hoped that the process was going to return to normal – it became clear during the day that this was not likely to happen.
At 2pm (28th April), the Northampton emergency process for Turnitin submissions was implemented which would allow students to send their submissions to email@example.com along with details of where the document needed to be submitted. As of 6am on the 29th April – over 600 emails had been sent to this mailbox.
At 6am on the 29th April it was confirmed that Turnitin was now accepting submissions again (although there was a delay on generating originality reports) and the message on NILE was updated to indicate that submissions should be now be made to the correct location on NILE.
A team of staff are now working though the 600 submissions and will be reallocating them to their correct locations in NILE to allow for staff marking.

Issues with submissions to Turnitin were experienced internationally yesterday. As agreed by the SAGE Steering Group and Student Experience Committee, an alternative submission process was set up to enable those students with submission deadlines of 28 April to submit. This was in the form of a mailbox (Turnitin@northampton.ac.uk). Students were informed of this alternative submission approach when they logged in to NILE and were also given information on the way in which they needed to submit.
The alternative submission approach was implemented at 2pm yesterday. 600 submissions were made yesterday covering a range of modules.
Turnitin is now working again. Students have this morning been updated on the situation through a message on NILE that reads: “Turnitin is accepting submissions but it is taking longer than normal to generate the originality report. Turnitin are working on the problem and apologise for any inconvenience. Reports submitted via email on the 28th April are currently being processed.“
As agreed institutionally, students with a deadline submission of 28 April will be given a blanket extension of 24 hours without penalty – in other words they can submit until 23:59 tonight (Tuesday 29 April) without penalty. Students can submit either via the mailbox (firstname.lastname@example.org) or via Turnitin in the usual way. After the end of today the mailbox will not accept further submissions.
SAS staff will now work to attach the submissions to the correct NILE sites and tutors are asked to be aware that this process may take up to the end of this week.
