{"id":4842,"date":"2016-02-24T16:01:37","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T16:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/?p=4842"},"modified":"2020-02-18T16:11:49","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T16:11:49","slug":"how-to-be-a-page-turner-for-the-right-reasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/2016\/02\/24\/how-to-be-a-page-turner-for-the-right-reasons\/","title":{"rendered":"How to be a page-turner for the right reasons!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[Posted on behalf of Elizabeth Palmer]<\/p>\n<p>When starting to make online activities for blended learning there is a temptation to take content that is currently being delivered face-to-face in lectures (through software such as Powerpoint) and moving that content into an online format where the students are \u2018digitally page turning\u2019 through material: read or watch x, y and z before class.<br \/>\nThe learning and teaching plan for blended learning is that we are creating <em><strong>interactive<\/strong><\/em> activities that support students towards developing their own knowledge, understanding and creating outputs that can then be <em><strong>used<\/strong><\/em> in class. In other words we are trying to flip the focus away from tutor created content that the student must passively absorb, to student-led interactive and created content.<\/p>\n<p>Any content provided to students should be done in an interactive, discovery based way i.e. rather than <strong><em>telling<\/em><\/strong> them the answer we allow them to <strong><em>discover<\/em><\/strong> the answer through questioning, testing, trialling, problem solving etc. online and then reinforce and develop this face to face. If you are trying out e-tivities for the first time Xerte can be a useful package to start this process. Have a look at these two examples of using Xerte to make interactive activities on academic skills: <a title=\"Learn how to synthesise\" href=\"https:\/\/skillshub.northampton.ac.uk\/2015\/09\/17\/learn-how-to-synthesise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a title=\"Critically evaluating journal articles\" href=\"https:\/\/xerte.northampton.ac.uk\/xertetoolkits\/play_993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.
