On behalf of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tableausoftware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tableau Software<\/a>, Andy Kirk recently presented a fascinating overview of the challenges of Art vs Science in data presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The overall message is that the nature of the visualisation needs to be appropriate for its intent &#8211; is this exploring or explaining, thinking or feeling? So, for example, is a filter needed to explore the content or is a bold graphical statement required?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/10\/intent.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3058\" style=\"margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/10\/intent-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andy refers to his excellent web site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visualisingdata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">visualisingdata.com<\/a> during the presentation &#8211; the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visualisingdata.com\/index.php\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\">resources<\/a>&#8216; section contains a massive selection of applications that could be used, including a &#8216;Web&#8217; section where most of the free online tools can be found. We have already experimented with some of these &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tableausoftware.com\/public\/\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tableau Public<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mypad.northampton.ac.uk\/nilex\/2014\/07\/17\/infogram-infographics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Infogram,\u00a0<\/a>for example &#8211; but there are many promising new ones such as <a href=\"http:\/\/site.numberpicture.com\/#simple-and-intuitive\" target=\"_blank\">Numberpicture<\/a>\u00a0that we hope to review as they become more polished.
