{"id":2380,"date":"2014-02-06T16:51:26","date_gmt":"2014-02-06T16:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/?p=2380"},"modified":"2014-02-06T16:51:26","modified_gmt":"2014-02-06T16:51:26","slug":"nile-gets-social","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/2014\/02\/06\/nile-gets-social\/","title":{"rendered":"NILE goes social"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You probably noticed a nice big welcome if you recently logged into NILE, as we\u2019ve switched on a new social tool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/02\/NILE_Social_Tools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2444\" style=\"margin: 4px 10px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/02\/NILE_Social_Tools-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/02\/NILE_Social_Tools-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/02\/NILE_Social_Tools-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a>The information screen you\u2019ll see when you log in explains what\u2019s new and how to set up your profile (or opt to \u201cdo it later\u201d), but we thought it would be useful to explain what it all means.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the new Cloud Profile Tools in NILE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud Profiles<\/strong> are a new set of cloud-based features available in NILE, that consist of basic <a title=\"Blackboard Help - Profiles\" href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/en-us\/Learn\/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11\/Student\/020_Your_Personal_Blackboard\/010_Profiles\" target=\"_blank\">Profiles<\/a> called Profile Cards, the <a title=\"Blackboard Help - The People Tool\" href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/en-us\/Learn\/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11\/Student\/020_Your_Personal_Blackboard\/030_People_Tool\" target=\"_blank\">People tool<\/a>, and enhancements to the <a title=\"Blackboard Help - Posts\" href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/en-us\/Learn\/9.1_SP_10_and_SP_11\/Student\/020_Your_Personal_Blackboard\/040_Posts_Page\" target=\"_blank\">Posts tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using your\u00a0<strong>Profile Card<\/strong> you can personalise your online presence in Blackboard by sharing a photo of yourself, information about your area of study\/work, and an \u201cabout me\u201d description.<\/p>\n<p>The tool is optional, so if you don\u2019t want to create a profile just yet, that\u2019s fine, you\u2019ll still be able to use the system.\u00a0If you do complete your profile, your information will be saved to the cloud (on Blackboard\u2019s servers &#8211; the product behind NILE) and your picture will appear in various places throughout NILE, such as Discussion Boards, Blogs, Journals, and Wikis. When someone hovers over this picture, your profile card will automatically pop-up so they can learn more about you.<\/p>\n<p>In some areas a small thumbnail is used whilst in other areas a large version is displayed \u2013 so it\u2019s worth choosing a good quality likeness of yourself:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/Profile-card-large-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/Profile-card-large-pic.jpg\" alt=\"NILE Profiles Screenshot\" width=\"322\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Your profile can appear in the new <strong>People Tool <\/strong>&#8211; a tool to help students, teaching staff and support staff put a face to your name, and when Social Profiles are enabled, connect with you. There are privacy options, so you can choose whether you want to keep your profile hidden, make it available to just the people who are enrolled into the same courses as you, or make it available to everyone at Northampton.<\/p>\n<p>Your profile can also appear in the <strong>Posts<\/strong> page which displays the latest discussion, blog and wiki activity taking place in the courses you are enrolled in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you want to create a Profile Card:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can edit your Blackboard profile from the Welcome screen\u00a0\u2013 click Facebook, Twitter or \u2018I\u2019ll update it myself\u2019. If you select \u2018I\u2019ll do it later\u2019, you won\u2019t see the welcome screen next time you log in \u2013 so you\u2019ll need to click the profile icon in the global navigation bar (top right).<\/p>\n<p>When you first create your profile, you have the option to start by pulling in information from Facebook or Twitter \u2013 such as your profile picture or the \u201cabout me\u201d description. If you do choose to do this, you must make sure the information you pull in to share is suitable for this professional academic environment. Also be mindful of your own safety and don\u2019t share anything too personal. We recommend you require others\u2019 request permission to follow you.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/Profile-card.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/Profile-card.jpg\" alt=\"NILE Welcome Profiles Screenshot\" width=\"313\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can also choose to add a link to your Facebook or Twitter profiles on your Blackboard Profile Card to help people who view your profile to connect with you outside of the Blackboard environment. Again this is entirely optional. If you don\u2019t use these services, or want to keep them separate from your work at the University that is ok \u2013 you don\u2019t need to link to these social networks for profiles to work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You should note that if you use Twitter or Facebook to import details then a link will be made to your Twitter or Facebook homepage &#8211; you may wish to break this link after importing or change your security to prevent people viewing details which should be hidden!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, you will be asked to add a personal email address to verify your account. This is because by creating a Cloud Profile, your information will be saved to Blackboard servers and you\u2019ll have the option to use the same profile on other Blackboard platforms, perhaps if you take a <a title=\"Blackboard Coursesites MOOC Catalogue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coursesites.com\/webapps\/Bb-sites-course-creation-BBLEARN\/pages\/mooccatalog.html\" target=\"_blank\">MOOC on Coursesites<\/a>, or work at another Institution. We recommend that you do not display your email address on your profile card. Staff and students at the University will be able to contact you via your Northampton email address should they need to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to all of the functionality added above, we have also enable the Cloud Spaces feature in NILE. You may access this from the NILE Global Navigation at the top right of your NILE screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/spaces.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2321\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.northampton.ac.uk\/learntech\/files\/2014\/02\/spaces.jpg\" alt=\"NILE SpacesScreenshot\" width=\"153.5\" height=\"319.5\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spaces are simple social areas that anyone can set up. They are not connected to a course or module area, and can even include people from other institutions that use Blackboard Spaces. Students working on a group project might want to set up a Space to share links to resources and thoughts with each other.
